Course Description
The PRPP Intervention course is an interactive course which builds on the knowledge and findings of the PRPP Assessment. In this course the theory and practice of PRPP intervention is explained and directly linked to the PRPP assessment. Intervention, which aims to improve task performance through targeting specific cognitive strategy application behaviours, is demonstrated utilising video case studies.
Practical sessions are also incorporated, throughout the course, allowing participants to design and practise intervention plans and strategies.
This Course is only open to Occupational Therapists who have completed the PRPP Assessment Course.
The Presenters
Chameleon Courses is thrilled to welcome Dr Chris Chapparro and Dr Judy Ranka back to Aotearoa/New Zealand shores for this PRPP Intervention course.
Chris and Judy jointly developed the Occupational Performance Model Australia (OPMA), the theoretical model underpinning the PRPP Assessment and Intervention Systems. Both are internationally renowned lecturers and have published extensively.

Dr Chris Chapparro
Chris is a Senior Lecturer in Occupational Therapy at the University of Syndey. Chris teaches and supervises undergraduate and graduate research students at the University.
In 2006 she was awarded a University of Sydney Excellence in Teaching Award. Her research portfolio has included occupational therapy theory development, ecological assessment of cognitive strategy application, effect of strategies to improve school performance of children with sensory processing and learning disorders, understanding resilience in traumatized children, and the impact of orthotic, casting and physical guidance interventions on upper limb and hand function.
Dr Judy Ranka
Judy is the Director and Principal Occupational Therapist of the Occupational Performance Network, Sydney Australia and an Honorary Academic at the University of Sydney in the Discipline of Occupational Therapy. Judy’s current research interests include occupational therapy theory development, ecological assessment and intervention for cognitive strategy application disorders in adults with neurological disorders (including HIV Associated Neurocognitive Disorder), and ecological assessment and intervention for reach, grasp and release disorders in adults with neurological disorders.

Course Description
The PRPP Intervention course is an interactive course which builds on the knowledge and findings of the PRPP Assessment. The PRPP Intervention is used by occupational therapists who have completed a PRPP Assessment course. The intervention approach aims to improve task performance mastery by addressing the specific cognitive strategy application behaviours identified through PRPP assessment as most impacting on mastery. Instructional methods used to address these behaviours incorporate cues and prompts that align with specific perceive, recall, plan and perform processing capacities, strategies and preferences.
In this course the theory and practice of PRPP intervention is explained and directly linked to the PRPP assessment. Intervention is demonstrated utilising video case studies and practical sessions are incorporated throughout the course, allowing participants to design and practise intervention plans and strategies.
Instructional methods are described which address the behaviours which most impact on a person’s level of task mastery. The theoretical base of cues and prompts that align with specific perceive, recall, plan and perform processing operations and preferences is explained.
The research which supports the efficacy of PRPP intervention is examined, including the application of PRPP intervention to increase the occupational performance for children and adults, with a variety of diagnoses and conditions that impact on their everyday cognition.
Objectives
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Compare and contrast PRPP Intervention with other forms of occupational therapy task- focused methods.
- Select critical strategy application behaviours to address in therapy.
- Set measureable occupational performance goals for task mastery and strategy application.
- Design a detailed plan to build strategy application behaviours required to improve or maintain performance mastery.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is taught on the PRPP Intervention course?
The PRPP intervention course teaches occupational therapists information processing strategies which can be used to target the information processing difficulties which a client is experiencing.
PRPP intervention enables occupational therapists to use relevant cognitive (information processing) strategies, simplify tasks, routines or roles and to adapt environment to enable their clients to manage the information processing required for the task.
A combination of these three approaches has been demonstrated to be very effective in enabling clients to increase their occupational performance.
Attending the PRPP intervention course ensures therapists learn to set meaningful, achievable, measurable goals and plans which enable their clients to achieve better outcomes.
Does it matter when a therapist attends the intervention course once they have completed the PRPP assessment course?
Experience has shown that it is better for therapists to consolidate and use the knowledge from the PRPP assessment course in their practice before attending the intervention course. This grounds the PRPP in the therapists’ practice reality and maximises their learning on the PRPP intervention course. Having said this, a therapist may choose to do both consecutively … however please be aware of the information processing load from the learning!
Can a therapist who has attended the PRPP intervention course teach colleagues how to use the PRPP intervention?
No … The Intervention course covers both the theoretical underpinnings of PRPP intervention alongside the practical application through the use of video case studies attending the full four day course.
Participants have multiple opportunities during the course to practise developing PRPP intervention plans. It is learning with this combined approach of theoretical and practical knowledge which is viewed as key for occupational therapists to be able to confidently apply PRPP intervention to their practice. It is, therefore, considered that attendance on the full four day PRPP intervention course is needed for therapists to have a robust, thorough, evidenced based understanding and working practical knowledge of PRPP intervention for their practice.
